SEATTLE -- Still cookin' with gas on Broadway after three years, and in London since last fall, Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller finally hits Seattle for a one week stand as part of the United Airlines Broadway at the Paramount series, Mar. 10-15.
Though Leiber and Stoller say "We didn't write songs, we wrote records..." some mighty popular hit standards came from those records, such as "Hound Dog", "Stand By Me". "On Broadway" and "Love Potion #9", to name just a handful.
Winner of the 1996 Grammy award for Best Musical Stage Show recording, Smokey Joe's Cafe, directed by Jerry Zaks, with musical staging by Jerry McNeely, was nominated for seven 1995 Tony awards including Best Musical.
Performances are Tues. through Thurs. evening at 8 PM, Sat. and Sun. matinees at 2 PM, and Sun. evening at 7 PM. The Paramount is at 9th and Pines St., downtown Seattle. For tickets ($25-$45) call (206) 292-ARTS, or stop by the Paramount box-office Mon.-Fri... 10 AM to 6 PM.
