Conceived by James Lapine (Sunday in the Park With George, Into the Woods, Passion), Sondheim on Sondheim debuted on Broadway last spring at the Roundabout Theatre Company. The two-act musical explores the life and career of the legendary Broadway composer-lyricist through his vast catalogue of work.
The resident production, which will incorporate the exclusive original interview footage from the Broadway engagement, will be a collaboration between Playhouse Square and the Great Lakes Theater Festival as part of its 50th anniversary season. Victoria Bussert will stage the production that will close the season May 30-June 17, 2012.
The touring season will launch with the 1950's jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet (Oct. 11-23); followed by the Tony Award-winning revivals of La Cage aux Folles (Nov. 8-20) and Hair (Jan. 17-29, 2012).
A host of current and recent new musicals are also Cleveland-bound, including the Tony-winning musical Memphis (Feb. 28-March 11, 2012); The Addams Family (April 10-22, 2012); and Twyla Tharp's Frank Sinatra-inspired dance piece Come Fly Away (May 8-20, 2012).
