In recent seasons, New York has seen Asian troupes tackle Our Town and Falsettoland, so now it's the West Coast's turn to turn to the East. Stephen Sondheim's Follies, opening May 17 at East West Players, will feature the mostly-Asian cast of Robert Almodovar, Yukari Black, Kerry K. Carnahan, Linda Dangcil, Liza Del Mundo, Valerie Dunlap, Bryan Geli, Ai Goeku, Ben Gonio, Michael Hagiwara, Linda Igarashi, Denise Iketani, Diana Iketani, Amy Hill, Alvin Ing, Kurt Kuniyoshi, Emily Kuroda, Sharline Liu, Paul Martinez, Kim Montelibano, Katherine Nakano, Deborah Nishimura, Jack Ong, Freda Foh Shen, Sab Shimono, Ken Takemoto and Marilyn Tokuda. Follies is the final production of EWP's 34th anniversary season; it began previews May 11 and will run through June 25, directed by Tim Dang.
The book, written by James Goldman, deals with a bunch of ex-showgirls who meet at a shuttered theatre for a reunion and recall their days of glory on a stage now scheduled for demolition. Songs include "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "I'm Still Here" and "In Buddy's Eyes."
