Classic Arts News Soprano Lead In Kansas City's Hamlet Will Act But Not Sing Tonight Soprano Lauren Skuce, scheduled to portray Ophelia in the Lyric Opera of Kansas City's production of Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet tonight, has developed a sinus infection and cannot sing, The Kansas City Star reports. But the show must go on, of course, and as director Thaddeus Strassberger's staging is complex, Skuce will silently act the role in while Sarah Tannehill sings the part from the orchestra pit.
According to the paper, Skuce has had the infection for a week and sang much of the November 4 opening performance at half-voice.

Tannehill is a University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory graduate and Kansas City resident; it will be the first time she has sung Ophelia.

Lyric artistic director Ward Holmquist told the Star, "Sarah is a wonderful artist, and we're delighted that she has consented to do this. She's in excellent voice, she's a wonderful sight-reader, and she has an indomitable artistic spirit."
