Classic Arts Features Sorenson Replaces Ramon Vargas in Tanglewood Onegin Due to a throat infection, Ramon Vargas has been forced to pull out of the August 2 performance of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Tanglewood Festival.

In his place, American tenor Garrett Sorenson will make his Tanglewood debut, stepping into the role of the young poet Lensky. He most recently sang the role with the Boston Lyric Opera in 2005 to great critical praise. Of his performance, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, "The poet Lensky's aria is one of Tchaikovsky's greatest inspirations, and the young American tenor Garrett Sorenson delivered it with beautiful, warm tone and heartfelt emotion...his lyric tenor voice is the real deal, and his musical and dramatic instincts are strong and true."

Sorenson is also a familiar face at the Metropolitan Opera, performing such roles as Alfredo in La Traviata, Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Scaramuccio in Ariadne Auf Naxos. Mr. Sorenson was also a past finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition's Southwest Region.

Sir Andrew Davis will lead the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in the 8:30 p.m. concert which also features world renowned soprano Renee Fleming as Tatiana. This production marks the Tanglewood premiere of Tchaikovsky's lyric opera based on the Aleksandr Pushkin verse novel of the same name. The two-and-a-half-hour performance will be sung in Russian with English supertitles and will include two intermissions.
