Southern Baptist Sissies, the fifth installment of Del Shores' Texas-based comedies, has checked into the Zephyr Theatre for an 8-week run. Shores' latest is an exploration into the lives of four gay men raised in the church.

Shores' previous plays include Sordid Lives, Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got the Will? and Daughters of the Lone Star State, among others. Producer Sharyn Lane and Shores worked together last year in bringing Sordid Lives to the big screen. The feature film starring Bonnie Bedlia, Delta Burke, Beau Bridges, Leslie Jordan, Olivia Newton-John, Newell Alexander, Rosemary Alexander and Ann Walker, is set for an early 2001 release. Shores has also signed to write and direct a movie for Showtime, starring Newton-John.

Sissies is narrated by Mark (Robert Lewis Stephenson), who wants to try and change the world, but how? He is conflicted because he knows that hate, preached in the name of the Lord, is sometimes spread by good people who mistakenly think they are doing the right thing. The other "sissies" also seek to resolve internal and external conflicts within the arena of the church, which is led by a rambunctious preacher played by Newell Alexander. Others in the cast who worked on Shores' upcoming film include Jordan, Walker and Rosemary Alexander.

Shores directs the play, whose musical director is Joe Patrick Ward. The Zephyr Theatre is located at 7456 Melrose Ave. For tickets and information call (310) 289-2999 or visit www.southernbaptistsissies.com
