News Spelling Bee and Spring Awakening Awarded Education Grants The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Spring Awakening have been awarded New York Education Grants by the League of American Theatres and Producers. Each musical receives a $5,000 grant towards its education program in 2007.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee worked with literacy groups and designed a study guide for teachers to integrate the show into their curriculum.

The show is also starting a new program called "Broadway Bee," which will involve teaching artists working with teachers to have their students participate in in-class exercises inspired by the musical's spelling bee format. Teaching artists will use improvisation and theatre games to help students to create sentences that use the words in the bee. The program will culminate in in-class spelling bees.

Spring Awakening's education program will address issues important to teenagers that relate to the show, such as finding your place in the world, sexual identity and health, and peer pressure. Teaching artists will lead students in exercises that address these issues while also leading voice and acting classes, having the students write song lyrics, and brainstorming creative ways to discuss contemporary problems.

The producers of the musical have also teamed up with StudentsLive — an organization that helps educate students through arts and introduces students to Broadway.

The New York Education Grants were established in 2002. The League also sponsors a grant program for education programs for touring Broadway shows. The two programs combined have awarded over $600,000.
