News Spring Awakening Begins Pre-Tour Engagement in San Diego Aug. 15 The North American tour of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening begins a pre-tour engagement at San Diego's Balboa Theatre Aug. 15.

Performances will continue through Aug. 31 at the California venue. The national tour will then officially kick off Sept. 4 at San Francisco's Curran Theatre (playing through Oct. 12).

Following their Broadway debuts in the Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater musical, Kyle Riabko and Blake Bashoff head the cast of the Spring Awakening tour in the roles of, respectively, Melchior and Moritz. The duo is joined onstage by Christy Altomare as Wendla and Steffi D as Ilse.

The company also features Krystina Alabado (Swing), Julie Benko (Ensemble), Todd Cerveris (Understudy Adult Men), Chase Davidson (Swing), Kate Fuglei (Understudy Adult Women), Gabrielle Garza (Anna), Kimiko Glenn (Thea), Sarah Hunt (Martha), Anthony Lee Medina (Otto), Andy Mientus (Hanschen), Ben Moss (Ernst), Angela Reed (Adult Women), Perry Sherman (Ensemble), Matt Shingledecker (Georg), Claire Sparks (Ensemble), Henry Stram (Adult Men) and Lucas A. Wells (Ensemble).

In a recent statement, the musical's producers said, "As we embark on our first tour across the United States and Canada, we are thrilled to announce a cast of exceptionally gifted young actors. We are continually amazed and delighted at the breadth of their talent and are excited for audiences coast to coast to have the opportunity to experience such exhilarating performances."

Chicago, IL (Aug. 4-16, 2009, Theatre TBA) Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."

Spring Awakening's cast album recently earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
