It will be the fifth production of the 2007-2008 Best of Broadway season, under the direction of Carole Shorenstein Hays.

"When I saw Spring Awakening, I was instantly struck by what a vital leap forward this work represents for the American musical," said Carole Shorenstein Hays, founder of SHN. "The show resonates with audiences young and old and touches everyone. Since this is the kind of work SHN is committed to presenting, there was no doubt that we would partner with the Spring Awakening creative team to launch the national tour in San Francisco."

Based on the infamous 1891 Frank Wedekind play and featuring an original score by Grammy-nominated recording star Duncan Sheik and Steve Sater (now both Tony Award winners for the Score, as well as for Sater's Book), the musical directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer "is the story of kids trying to break loose and adults trying to hold on; it is the story of young people everywhere. This coming of age tale is primarily seen through the eyes of three teenagers: the handsome rebel, the innocent woman-child, and the misunderstood loner."

On June 10, the musical won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Director, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score and Best Featured Actor in a Musical, John Gallagher Jr.

Spring Awakening features book and lyrics written by Steven Sater, music by Duncan Sheik, directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones. The production features costumes by Susan Hilferty (Tony award nominee), set design by Christine Jones (Tony award nominee), lighting by Kevin Adams (Tony award winner) and sound by Brian Ronan. The producing team for Spring Awakening is Ira Pittelman, Tom Hulce, Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and The Atlantic Theater Company (Neil Pepe, artistic director and Andrew D. Hamingson, managing director).

Currently, Spring Awakening tour tickets are only available as part of the 2007-2008 Best of Broadway subscription series. For subscription information, visit shnsf.com or call (415) 551-2050 or toll free at (877) 797-SUBS (7827). Single and group tickets will be available at a later date.
