News Stage and Screen Star Benedict Cumberbatch Announces Engagement Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his starring role in "Sherlock," has announced his engagement to theatre director Sophie Hunter, Entertainment Weekly reports.

"Mr B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London," read an announcement in the London Times.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Hunter has directed plays and operas. She is an Oxford graduate and was the recipient of the Samuel Beckett award in 2007 for writing and directing her own play, The Terrific Electric.

An Olivier Award winner, Cumberbatch's stage credits include the National Theatre's 2011 production of Frankenstein and 50 Years on Stage. He will star in the title role of Hamlet in 2015. His film credits include "August: Osage County," "The Fifth Estate," "12 Years a Slave" and the "The Imitation Game."
