What show recently impressed you?
I had the privilege of seeing Bette Middler in I'll Eat You Last and was totally transported. Such a tour de force! One-man, or in this case, one-woman shows can be tricky, but the writing was so witty and entertaining and Bette really did an amazing job at creating a fully realized character. One of my favorite moments was when she lit up a joint in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Classic. I also want to give a quick shout out to an amazing reading I saw at Columbia of Witness Uganda, which is going to be staged at the A.R.T. Keep your eyes out for that one; even in reading format, it was an incredible theatrical experience.
What production are you most excited to see?
I have to say, because I am such a fan, the revival of Cabaret. The last time it was running on Broadway I still lived in California. I played the Emcee in high school (so not appropriate) and would fantasize about seeing it in NYC. The show has the perfect balance of theatricality, great music, raunchiness and unexpected emotional poignancy. What more could you want from a night at the theatre? Plus, Kit Kat Girls!!
What play/musical would you most like to revive on Broadway, and which role would you want to play?
Hmm, this is a tough one as I am currently working on a show I've always wanted to see revived...and usurping the role of the Emcee from the incredible Alan Cumming seems a bit far-fetched. Although it was just done on Broadway, it has always been a dream of mine to play Tony in West Side Story. I am a big fan of revisiting the classics, shaking them up and finding something new...Or maybe a totally twisted version of something like Side Show — only with two brothers. OK, now that is far-fetched.
What are your current/upcoming projects?
Currently, I am playing Lewis in Diane Paulus' revival of Pippin. Having the time of my life at the circus! The future? We will see what unfolds, but for now I am working on releasing a solo album of original music sometime later this fall.
