According to The Hollywood Reporter, an early 2016 Broadway arrival is expected. No dates or theatre have been announced. THR speculates that the intimate, Manhattan-set play that takes place over the course of a family Thanksgiving dinner will take up residence at the Helen Hayes Theatre, currently home to Dames at Sea.
Tony winner Joe Mantello directs the ensemble piece that features Cassie Beck, Reed Birney, Jayne Houdyshell, Lauren Klein, Arian Moayed and Sarah Steele. It is expected that the entire cast will transfer with the production.
Performances are set to run through Dec. 27 Off-Broadway.
The production will mark Karam's Broadway playwriting debut. Read reviews for The Humans here.
Here's how The Humans is described: "After a sleepless night, Mr. Blake has brought his family from Pennsylvania to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter's new apartment. As darkness falls outside the crumbling pre-war duplex, mysterious things start to go bump in the night and family tensions reach a boiling point. Stephen Karam (Sons of the Prophet, Speech & Debate) takes a fresh look at the hilarity, heart and horrors of the modern American family."
The Humans is part of Roundabout's New Play Initiative, a collection of programs designed to foster and produce new work by emerging and established artists. The Humans is Karam’s second commission from Roundabout following Sons of the Prophet (2012 Pulitzer Prize Finalist, 2012 Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Hull-Warriner Awards for Best Play; inaugural Sam Norkin Drama Desk Award). Roundabout also produced his 2007 playwriting debut Speech & Debate, which also starred Steele.
The Laura Pels Theatre is located in the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Centre for Theatre at 111 West 46th Street. For more information, call (212) 719-1300 or visit RoundaboutTheatre.org.
