Stephen Karam, currently represented on Broadway by the Tony-winning The Humans, is to see his 2007 Off-Broadway play Speech & Debate receive its U.K. premiere at London's Trafalgar Studios 2, beginning performances February 22, 2017, prior to an official opening February 24, for a run through April 1.
Presented by Defibrillator Theatre company, it will be directed by Tom Attenborough. Casting is still to be announced.
Originally presented at Roundabout Theatre Company's Roundabout Underground space Off-Broadway in 2007, the play revolves around homophobia, teenage alienation, and the limits of online privacy.
In the play, three misfits, Solomon, Diwata, and Howie, may go to the same high school, but they have never met and their peers just don't take them seriously…. until a sex scandal involving one of their teachers brings them together. By creating a Speech and Debate team, they finally have a chance to be heard, but will they be able to get their interpretive dance version of The Crucible ready in time for the big day?
