Stratford artistic director Des McAnuff, who also staged the production, has announced that Superstar will now rock Sept. 9, Oct. 4 and Oct. 16 at 8 PM. The production opened to acclaim June 3, and Stratford announced a weeklong extension through Nov. 6 in repertory at Stratford's proscenium Avon Theatre in Stratford, Ontario. All performances, except for the three newly-added shows, are sold-out.
Following its Canadian engagement, Jesus Christ Superstar will play La Jolla Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Theatre in La Jolla, CA, from Nov. 18 to Dec. 31. There has been speculation that the production, which received the blessing of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, may be Broadway-bound in 2012.
Jesus Christ Superstar features Nolan as Jesus, Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Young as Judas Iscariot, Tony Award winner Brent Carver (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Parade) as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod and Mike Nadajewski as Peter.
The creative team includes choreographer Lisa Shriver, musical director Rick Fox, set designer Robert Brill, costume designer Paul Tazewell, lighting designer Howell Binkley, sound designer Jim Neil, video designer Sean Nieuwenhuis, dramaturg Chad Sylvain, fight director Daniel Levinson, aerial stunt coordinator Simon Fon.
