Off-Broadway News Summer and Smoke, With Marin Ireland and Nathan Darrow, Opens Off-Broadway The Tennessee Williams play is revived by Classic Stage Company and Transport Group.

Classic Stage Company and Transport Group celebrate the opening of their co-production of Tennessee WilliamsSummer and Smoke at CSC May 3. The Off-Broadway revival began previews April 13, with a cast led by Tony nominee Marin Ireland (Reasons to Be Pretty) as Alma Winemiller alongside House of Cards actor Nathan Darrow as Dr. John Buchanan, Jr.

Transport Group Artistic Director Jack Cummings III directs a cast completed by Glenna Brucken as Rosemary, Phillip Clark as Dr. Buchanan, Sr., Hannah Elless as Nellie Ewell, Elena Hurst as Rosa Gonzales, Tina Johnson as Mrs. Bassett, Gerardo Rodriguez as Papa Gonzales, T. Ryder Smith as Reverend Winemiller, Ryan Spahn as Archie Kramer, Jonathan Spivey as Roger Doremus, and Barbara Walsh as Mrs. Winemiller.

Set in turn-of-the-century Mississippi, Summer and Smoke tells the story of a local minister’s daughter, Alma, and her relationship with the neighborhood doctor who grew up next door. The play premiered on Broadway in 1948 and was revived again in 1996.

Set design is by Dane Laffrey with costume design by Kathryn Rohe, lighting design by R. Lee Kennedy, and sound design by Walter Trarbach. Original music is by Michael John LaChiusa. Casting is by Nora Brennan Casting.
