News Sun, Faber, Rodriguez, Newman, Gross and More Sing Alter Songs in Free May 11 Concert The acclaimed Songbook series — produced and hosted by John F. Znidarsic — continues May 11 with an evening dedicated to the songs of award-winning composer/lyricist Gaby Alter.

The free concert — the final Songbook of the season — features the vocal talents of Pearl Sun (Happiness), Mary Faber (Avenue Q), Matthew Hydzik (West Side Story), Krysta Rodriguez (In the Heights), Lauren Marcus, Jason Williams, Jared Weiss, Liz Gross, Tommy Newman and Graham Stevens. Show time is 6 PM.

Michelle Tattenbaum directs the early-evening performance with musical direction by Gillian Berkowitz.

Gaby Alter is the recipient of a 2008 Jonathan Larson Grant and a winner of the San Francisco Theater Critics' Circle and New York Fringe Festival Songwriting awards. His projects include Band GeeksTwenty-Nine (with Tommy Newman), which was selected as NYU Steinhardt's 2007 spring musical; and Reality! with playwright Itamar Moses, which was workshopped at the Cape Cod Theatre Project in 2008. Alter has written songs and music for PBS' "Pre-School Kids Block," the Public Radio show "Backstory," and the documentaries "Nerdcore Rising" (2008 South by Southwest Film Festival) and "Keep Eye On Ball: The Hashim Khan Story."

Now in its 18th season, the Songbook series is held at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts' Bruno Walter Auditorium, which is located at 111 Amsterdam Avenue, south of 65th Street.
