Signature Theatre kicks off its production of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Red Letter Plays, two plays which re-imagine Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel The Scarlet Letter. The first of the works by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Fucking A, begins previews August 22.
Fucking A, directed by Obie Award winner Jo Bonney, is scheduled to run through October 1 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre. The story sees Hester Smith, a revered and reviled abortionist, formulate a plan to free her son from prison.
The cast is made up of J. Cameron Barnett (The Emperor Jones), Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton), Ben Horner (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), Theatre World Award winner Joaquina Kalukango (The Color Purple), Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch (The Wayside Motor Inn), Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Christine Lahti (Chicago Hope), Ruibo Qian (Bull in a China Shop), Drama Desk Award nominee Elizabeth Stanley (On the Town), and Raphael Nash Thompson (Pericles).
The production will officially open September 11 and will run simultaneously with Parks’ In the Blood, set to begin previews August 29. The second play introduces us to Hester La Negrita, a penniless mother of five condemned by the men who love her.
In the Blood, directed by Sarah Benson, will run through October 8 in The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre.
The creative team for Fucking A is made up of Rachel Hauck (scenic design), Emilio Sosa (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), Darron L West (sound design), and Todd Almond (music direction). Evangeline Rose Whitlock is the production stage manager. Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting.
