German Theater Abroad is presenting Suzuki, a new play by Alexsei Schipenko. It will run May 31-June 18 at a site-specific venue on Manhattan’s west side, 547 West 27th Street (10th and 11th).

Suzuki tells the story of the Berlin citizen Klaus Klaus in New York, and his search to find a four-wheel drive. Klaus Klaus goes to a garage in the highly Turkish-populated section of the city, where he discovers a new life.

The play is directed by Jarreth Merz. Ronald Marx plays the leading role. The show also features Christian Kahrmann, well-known in Germany for his TV and film appearances. The production staff includes Edo Born (set design), and Hannelore Nennecke (costume designer) in her New York debut. The show culminates the combined efforts of a Russian playwright, American, German, Turkish, and Hispanic actors, with Dutch and German technical staff.

The German Theater Abroad (GTA) strives to produce international work that bridges European perspective and American reality. It was founded in 1996 with a reading of Klaus Pohl’s The Beautiful Stranger . Merz, Marx and Kahrmann were all founding members. Since the company's opening, they put on New German Voices at the Cherry Lane Theater. All of their work tries to bring a contemporary German vision into American theater.

Performances run Wednesday through Sunday at 8 PM, with an additional performance Tuesday June 13 at 8 PM. Tickets are $12. A reception follows each performance. For reservations call GTA at (212) 388-9990. --by Daniel Fischer
