Because of the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America, the annual Golden Globe Awards telecast and champagne dinner were canceled. Instead, the names of the winners were simply read during "The Golden Globes Winners Special" by co-hosts Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell.

The Tim Burton-directed "Sweeney Todd" — based on the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical of the same name — fared particularly well, picking up awards for Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy for star Johnny Depp.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association "is a group of Southern California based international journalists," who started the awards over 60 years ago.
