The cultural panel discussion series, "Times Talks," sponsored by The New York Times, lost the creative team of Sweet Smell of Success as participants in a planned April 7 appearance called "Behind the Scenes with Sweet Smell of Success." Actor John Lithgow, librettist John Guare, composer Marvin Hamlisch and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon were announced to meet on a panel with moderator Jesse McKinley, the Times culture reporter, at Lighthouse International 2 PM April 7. A spokesman for the show said the team canceled its participation last week due to "scheduling conflicts."

Observers suggest the makers of the new musical pulled out due to the paper's chilly reception to the new musical based on the film of the same name. Producers of the show remain committed to the production and are trying to beat the negative reviews (and embrace several positive ones).

Those inquiring about the Sweet Smell "Times Talks" panel by phone (888) NYT-1870 are being told it was canceled and are being aimed at an April 9 discussion with composer lyricist Jerry Herman.
