Sydney Theatre Company opens its 1998 season with Patrick Maber's Closer.
Director Marion Pots comments "Closer shows human relationships refracted through a very particular 90's lens. Love isn't rose colored - it has multi-hues and a sharper edge. It seduces while it bites.
Set in contemporary London, Marber takes under the skin of four people in the body business -- an obituarist, Dan; a stripper, Alice; a dermatologist, Larry and a photographer, Anna -- who over four years, collide and break apart, stirred by lust, jealously and a yearning for the truth.
Dan rescues Alice from a traffic accident and falls in love with her. This results in his writing changing focus - from the dead to the living - and her life as a stripper becomes the subject of his first novel.
After an erotic internet encounter, Anna and Larry become ensnared in a website of desire. Closer opens New Year's Eve December 31 at 6 p.m., and plays Monday to Saturday at 8 p.m. Wednesday at 1 p.m. Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Wharf 1 Pier 4, Hickson Rd. Walsh Bay.
