News   Teens Pen Plays for MCC's FreshPlay Festival
MCC Theater has announced the works that will be part of its Youth Company's fourth annual FreshPlay Festival, Aug. 6-9.

The evenings of one-acts penned by teens will play Playwrights Horizons' Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

MCC Theater, under the artistic direction of Lucy Thurber and Stephen DiMenna, presents the FreshPlay Festival "produced for the stage by a roster of professional directors, actors and designers," according to an announcement. "FPF merges the voices and creativity of urban youth with the experience of professionals in an evening of provocative, innovative and fresh theater."

The 2008 FreshPlay Festival line-up follows (all shows begin at 7 PM):

August 6 and 8:

  • Mad Comfortable by Hans Nielsen (age 18, Satellite Academy)
Jackson Gay directs the work described thusly: "In an often unfair world, Jamie and his friends manage to remain the one thing nobody else can be: happy. The city blooms in one teenager's whimsical journey through adolescence."
  • Tattle Tell by Julia Torres (age 19, New Design High School)
"There's the world you love, and there's the one you leave behind." Maria Goyanes directs "this brutally honest family play, [in which] one young girl learns that the things that scare her may set her free." August 7 and 9:

  • The Naked Hour by Pedro Guerrero (age 19, Marble Hill High School)
"Do we really know anything for certain? Or do we just pretend to?" poses this play, directed by Chad Rabinovitz. "Religion and skepticism collide in this comedic morality tale."
  • POOF by Apple Vargas (age 19, High School of Fashion Industries) "Adam is only sure of one thing: he knows everything. The mind is a playground and a prison in this fiercely original play." Donya Washington directs. The design team for the FreshPlay Festival features Joel Sherry (set), Arnulfo Maldonado (costumes), Peter Hoerburger (lighting) and Isaac Butler (sound).

Tickets to the FreshPlay Festival at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, 416 West 42nd Street, are available by calling (212) 727-7722 ext. 228. For more information visit mcctheater.org.
