It will begin performances Oct. 26, prior to an official opening Oct. 28, for a four-week season through Nov. 20. Produced by Jermyn Street Theatre by special arrangement with the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, it is directed by Gene David Kirk, the theatre's artistic director.
The play's two characters are Felice and Clare, actors on tour who are also brother and sister. They find themselves deserted by their acting troupe in a decrepit "state theatre in an unknown state." Faced by an audience expecting a performance, they enact The Two-Character Play, an illusion within an illusion. According to press materials, the play is partially autobiographical, with Clare loosely based on Williams' sister Rose, and Felice on Williams himself. The play was re-titled Out Cry for its short-lived Broadway run of 12 performances at the Lyceum Theatre in 1973, where Michael York and Cara Duff-MacCormick starred.
Catherine Cusack, who plays Clare, was seen in Edward Bond's Bingo opposite Patrick Stewart at Chichester's Minerva Theatre recently. Other recent credits include Goneril in King Lear in a Dublin and Irish tour, and the title role in Mary Stuart for the National Theatre of Scotland. Her film roles include Sarah in "Finding Neverland" with Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp. She played Frankie in "Ballykissangel," the award-winning BBC TV series.
Paul McEwan, who plays Felice, was in Gene David Kirk's production of Decade at Theatre 503 earlier this year. His theatre credits include a season with the RSC, including Steven Pimlott's production of Richard II as Bushy/Exton. His TV credits include "Strictly Confidential" with Suranne Jones and as PC Shane Doyle in "Emmerdale."
Gene David Kirk's recent directorial credits include Crooked Wood by Gillian Plowman at Jermyn Street Theatre, and Stewart Permultt's Real Babies Don’t Cry, which won a Scotsman Fringe First Award for its run at this year's Edinburgh Festival. The Two-Character Play is presented in memory of Corin Redgrave. A Gala Night on Nov. 18 will be presented in aid of Caged Prisoners and Outside Edge, charities that were supported by Corin Redgrave and Kika Markham.
