News The Awesome 80s Prom Celebrates First Year in New York; Other Cities to Come Off-Broadway's The Awesome 80s Prom celebrates its first anniversary on the New York stage July 30 as other productions to play across the country are in the works.

The premiere regional production opened in Minneapolis this month and currently continues through Aug. 27. A Baltimore premiere is slated to open Sept. 27, with Chicago and Boston runs to follow later this year. The New York run at the famed nightclub, Webster Hall, continues indefinitely. The interactive show got underway at Webster Hall on July 23, 2004, and opened a week later. It is described as being in the audience-participation tradition of Tony & Tina's Wedding and The Donkey Show. Performances are Saturday evenings only.

Creator Ken Davenport presents the new piece, which takes audiences back to 1989, after Culture Club and Duran Duran's heyday, but before hip hop took over the airways. "Prepare yourself for a unique theatrical experience that will take you back in time — think 'Pretty in Pink,' 'The Breakfast Club' . . . or any movie that featured Molly Ringwald!," reads press material. "All your favorite characters from your favorite ‘80s movies are represented ...from the captain of the football team to the Asian exchange student, as we watch them all compete for Prom King and Prom Queen.. and just like 'American Idol,' the audience gets to pick the winner!"

Webster Hall is located at 125 East 11th Street. For more information visit www.awesome80sprom.com. For tickets call (212) 352-3101.
