In the show, Neil McRae is a struggling musician who can't embrace popular music. He meets a wealthy family and must decide between marrying their daughter, Gladys, a move which would offer him the financial security to concentrate on his music, or stay with the woman he loves.

Peccadillo's Artistic Director Dan Wackerman is directing the show, and has added elements of hip-hop, rap and funk to put a contemporary spin on this classic comedy. Wackerman directed Peccadillo's productions of Desire Under the Elms, and In a Garden. He also directed the sold-out staging of The Beauty Part last season.

Other production staff members include Anne Lommel (set and costume design), Mark Simpson (lighting design), and David Fuhrer (projection designer). The cast includes Ernesto Altamirano, Robert Arcaro, Tracee Beazer, Rodd Allen Durkin, James T. Hall, Gerald Heintz, Alicia Minshew, Amy Maluno, Simon Petrie, Tara Sands, Patrick Thorbourne, Robert Tyree, Colleen Smith Wallnau and Chio Yamanda.

Co-playwright George S. Kaufman won the Pulitzer prize for both You Can't Take it With you in 1937, and Of Thee I Sing in 1932, the latter the first musical to win the award. He also wrote The Man Who Came to Dinner which is currently enjoying a revival on Broadway with Nathan Lane. The other playwright, Marc Connelly, wrote Pulitzer Prize winner, The Green Pastures, and several other collaborations with George S. Kaufman. The choreographer is Bev Brown. Bev has worked with artists such as Kool and the Gang, Janet Jackson, Salt & Pepa, and LL Cool J. She also helped choreograph the MTV 1999 Music Awards.

The Bank Street Theatre is at 155 Bank Street, between Washington and West Streets in the far West Village. For reservations for Beggar on Horseback, call (212) 592-3312.
