BURBANK, CA -- The West Coast premiere of Helen Edmundson's historical drama, The Clearing, will take place Aug. 7 at the Gene Bua Theatre at 8 PM.

A love story set in 1650s Ireland, the play deals with an Irish woman, Madeleine, and her English husband, Robert, who are banished to a desolate province of Ireland when the Irish suffer a brutal defeat at the hands of the British army. "Robert and Madeleine fight to save their marriage and family from the horrors of religious intolerance and cultural imperialism brought about by a government hell-bent on splitting a nation and its people in two," said a company spokesperson.

The Clearing, winner of Britain's John Whiting Award, had its world premiere at the Bush Theatre in London in 1993.

The production plays through Sept. 13 at the Bua, 3435 W. Magnolia Ave. Performances are Friday and Saturday 8 PM; Sunday 2 PM. Tickets are $12; student, senior and group tickets $10. For information call (818) 380 7135.
