News The Full Monty to Shutter in West End; Further U.K. Tour Dates to Follow The new stage version of The Full Monty, based on the 1997 British film of the same title, is to shutter prematurely at the West End's Noel Coward Theatre March 29. It opened officially Feb. 25, and was originally booking for a limited 16-week run through June 14.

Scripted by Simon Beaufoy, who also wrote the film's screenplay, it premiered at Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre prior to a national tour. The West End transfer is produced by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers. In a press statement, they commented, "It is with great sadness that this show will close despite having played to packed houses on its UK tour. Simply not enough of a West End audience shared in the excitement of this terrific production." In a March 16 posting on Facebook, Kenny Doughty – who plays Gaz – told of the disappointment of hearing the news of the closure of the night before: "Yesterday, on the day we had 2 full houses and 2 standing ovations. In the week our play got an Olivier nomination we were given the shocking news that the play is being pulled. We were summoned to a full company call on stage immediately after curtain call – you could still hear the whoops and cheers from the audience behind the curtain as the producer gave us our 2 weeks notice. I am utterly devastated not only for myself but for every single soul that has given their all for this play. I am so incredibly proud of this play and everybody in the Full Monty company. We delivered night after night. The audiences loved it. We got amazing reviews. An Olivier nomination. So it's with a heavy heart that I announce that the final show of The Full Monty in the West End will be Saturday 29th March."

It will, however, resume a 32-week national tour in the fall, with performances beginning Sept. 11 at Manchester's Opera House.
