News The Last Five Years Makes California Debut at Laguna Playhouse, Jan. 3-Feb. 1 The Laguna Playhouse nabs the California premiere of Jason Robert Brown's musical The Last Five Years, set to open its run at Laguna Beach, Jan. 3.

Drew Scott Harris directs the west coast staging of the musical which played Off Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre (starring Wicked's Norbert Leo Butz and Aida's Sherie Rene Scott) in 2002 following a run at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre.

Rick Cornette (Mamma Mia! national tour) and Kim Huber (Beauty and the Beast) star in the marital reversal musical as a couple reliving their romance from opposite ends — beginning to end (for him) and end to beginning (for her). The work features over a dozen original songs (and sparse dialogue) which interweave the evolution and decline of the relationship.

Tom Griffin serves as musical director. The design team includes Narelle Sissons (scenic), Paulie Jenkins (lighting), Dwight Richard Odle (costume) and David Edwards (sound).

Composer Brown wrote the Tony Award-winning score to Parade. Other credits include Urban Cowboy, Songs for a New World and incidental music for Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo and The Waverly Gallery.

For tickets to The Last Five Years, at Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, CA, call (949) 497-ARTS (2787). For more information, visit www.LagunaPlayhouse.com.
