News The Nutcracker, Adapted and Choreographed by Spider-Man's Chase Brock, Begins Nov. 28 Flat Rock Playhouse, in partnership with Pardee Hospital and Pardee Hospital Foundation, presents the world premiere of Chase Brock's adaptation of The Nutcracker beginning Nov. 28 at the Playhouse Mainstage in North Carolina.

The work, adapted from E. T. A. Hoffman's story "The Nutcracker and The Mouse King" and choreographed by Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark choreographer Brock, continues its limited engagement through Dec. 22.

According to Flat Rock, "Brock's adaptation of The Nutcracker is nestled in mountains like the Blue Ridge Mountains, set in a town like Hendersonville, on a tiny-but-bustling street like Main Street. It's Christmas Eve and here we meet Marie, the overachieving, independent daughter of serious and strict parents. Teased by posters and music all around town for an upcoming production of The Nutcracker, Marie is resigned to the fact that her parents will never let her see such a 'frivolous' show. But, after receiving a magical nutcracker as a gift, Marie creates her own fantastical version of The Nutcracker in her bedroom, borrowing from people and places she has seen around her hometown including scenes from store shop windows, candy shops, cars from commercials she has seen on TV and flowers from the Biltmore's 'Festival of Flowers.' The beauty and magic of the first snow of the season prompts a wonderful and magical encounter and Marie experiences a delightful reversal of fortune, making the fantasy a reality."

The work features dancers from The Chase Brock Experience (Brock's Brooklyn-based contemporary dance company) as well as from international theatre productions and dance companies, including Mary Poppins, Movin' Out, Kansas City Ballet, Cirque du Soleil and MOMIX.

Also featured are Andrew Livingston and Lauren Rogers Hopkins as well as 20 of the Playhouse's YouTheatre students.

The production includes new musical arrangements by musical director Rob Berman, costumes by Ann Hould-Ward and scenic design by Dennis C. Maulden. The Flat Rock Playhouse Mainstage is located at 2661 Greenville Hwy in Flat Rock, NC. For more information and tickets, call (828) 693-0731 or visit FlatRockPlayhouse.org
