News The President and the Pakistani, A New Play About a Young Barack Obama, Begins at London's Waterloo East Theatre Oct. 3 A new play The President and the Pakistani about a young Barack Obama, begins performances at London's Waterloo East Theatre Oct. 3, prior to an official opening Oct. 5, for a run through Nov. 4.

Written by journalist and writer Rashid Razaq, whose film "Man and Boy" won the Best Short at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and whose previous play Arab Sring was featured on the BBC Arabic Service, it is described in press materials as "the story of a young man and the friend he has to leave behind to achieve his dreams. Based on the incredible chapter in Barack Obama's life, when he lived in a crime-ridden and violent neighbourhood with a Pakistani illegal immigrant, it is about a night when a hunt for the truth exposes the lies we want to believe in."

It is directed by Tom Attenborough, and the cast comprises Syrus Lowe and Junaid Faiz.

Tim Johanson Productions presents a Rhapsody of Words production.

Attenborough is artistic  director of Rhapsody of Words and an associate artist of Hightide Festival Theatre. Recent directing credits include Step 9 (of 12) (Trafalgar Studios), Port Authority (Southwark Playhouse) and The Mountaintop (Derby Live).
