The film work of two-time Tony winner Al Pacino, most recently on Broadway in China Doll, will be celebrated by the Greenwich Village cinema The Quad beginning March 14.
The retrospective, entitled Pacino's Way, will continue through March 29 and feature 25 titles honoring Pacino's work in front of and behind the camera. The celebration coincides with the March 30 U.S. theatrical premiere of Pacino's documentary-drama Wilde Salomé (2011) and its companion piece Salomé (2013)—both starring Jessica Chastain alongside Pacino himself.
Among the films that will be featured in the retrospective are Sea of Love (1989), Heat (1995), Looking for Richard (1996), and Chinese Coffee (2000).
“I am grateful to The Quad Cinema for having this retrospective of my films,” Pacino said in a statement. “It’s particularly heartwarming because Greenwich Village where the Quad is located is the place where I went to live as a teenager and where I developed as a young actor. In a sense this is a homecoming for me and I am deeply honored and remain humbled by this acknowledgement.”
“Al Pacino is not only one of our greatest living actors, he’s perhaps the quintessential New York actor,” added Quad Director of Programming C. Mason Wells. “We’re honored to be able to celebrate his career in the city in which so many of his films are set.”
SEE WHAT IS COMING TO BROADWAY IN THE NEAR FUTURE
About the forthcoming U.S. debuts of Wilde Salomé and Salomé, Pacino said, “Salomé is my attempt to merge theatre and film. The mediums can often collide and my hope is to have them unify so that you're seeing pure theatre on film. To make that hybrid effective has been my goal; to have the more naturalistic, photogenic qualities of film complement the language-driven essence of classical theatre."
Pacino has received eight Oscar nominations, winning one for Scent of a Woman. He won his Tonys for his work in The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel and Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? Last year he returned to the stage on the West Coast, starring opposite Judith Light in the Pasadena Playhouse world premiere of God Looked Away (in which he played Tennessee Williams).
The full series lineup and schedule will be announced later this month.
