News The Robber Bridegroom Will Play City Theatre in October; Casting Announced The International City Theatre will stage Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman's Tony Award-nominated musical adaptation of the Eudora Welty novella The Robber Bridegroom beginning Oct. 11 in Long Beach, CA.

The Appalachian-set musical, which features a bluegrass-inflected score by Waldman and book and lyrics by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Uhry (Parade, Driving Miss Daisy), will be staged by Todd Nielsen. The Robber Bridegroom will open Oct. 14 for a run through Nov. 6.

The cast will feature Chad Doreck (Altar Boyz) as Jaime Lockhart, Jamison Lingle as Rosamund, as well as Michael Stone Forrest, Sue Goodman (Les Miserables, Mystery of Edwin Drood), Tyler Ledon, Tatiana Mac (Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl), Teya Patt, Michael Uribes and Adam Wylie (Wicked).

Here's how ICT bills the musical: "The Robber Bridegroom is a comic, adult fairy tale that’s loaded with symbolism, innuendo and double entendre. It’s the story of a charming gentleman bandit, the rich plantation owner’s daughter he loves, the wicked, sex-starved stepmother who wants her dead, and an evil thief who carries his brother’s head around in a trunk – all set to an infectious Broadway/bluegrass score."

The design team includes Stephen Gifford (set design), Donna Ruzika (lighting design), Paul Fabre (sound design), Kim DeShazo (costume design), Anthony Gagliardi (hair and wig design) and Patty and Gordon Briles (prop design).

Gerald Sternbach will musical direct The Robber Bridegroom, which includes such songs as "Sleepy Man" and Nothin' Up." The Robber Bridegroom debuted on Broadway at the Harkness Theatre in 1975 as part of the Acting Company's repertory billing, which also included Edward II, The Time of Your Life and Three Sisters. Kevin Kline and Patti LuPone portrayed Jaime and Rosamund, respectively. The musical launched a national tour with new cast members and made a Broadway return in 1976 with Barry Bostwick and Rhonda Coullett in the central roles.
