In celebration of their March 22 shared birthday, we honor Sondheim, who turns 82, and Lloyd Webber, who turns 64, with a look back at their careers in music and theatre. Sondheim, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Passion—not to mention the Tony for Lifetime Acheivement in 2008—was represented this season with the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of Follies. His Tony-winning Into the Woods will also be seen in an upcoming Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theatre this summer.
Lloyd Webber, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Evita, Cats and Sunset Boulevard, is represented this Broadway season with revivals of Jesus Christ Superstar, which officially opens on his birthday, and Evita, which began previews at the Marquis Theatre March 12 and will officially open April 5 as well as the long-running The Phantom of the Opera.
