News THE SCREENING ROOM: Pasek and Paul's New Song for "Smash," Sung by Katharine McPhee "Smash" star Katharine McPhee sings a new song "Caught in the Storm," penned by A Christmas Story and Dogfight writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, as part of the second season of "Smash."

As previously reported in Playbill.com's Stage to Screens feature with "Smash" star Jeremy Jordan, the upcoming season of the NBC musical series features music by a handful of young songwriters, including Pasek and Paul, Joe Iconis and Drew Gasparini.

The song that McPhee sings, "Caught in the Storm," is from a new fictitious musical penned by Jordan (as Jimmy Collins) and Andy Mientus (as Kyle Bishop), titled Hit List.

According to Jordan, "For the amount of material they wanted for each new episode, it began to be too much [for 'Smash' composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman], so they sort of started spreading it out, which makes Jimmy look like he's like some musical genius who can change styles," said Jordan with a laugh. "While all the music is much more pop/rock/contemporary, it does shift a bit from Broadway/pop to true-blue pop music that you would hear on the radio today to more traditional, contemporary musical theatre, too… It definitely gives [Jimmy] a nice range."
