The Verdict: The Critics Review The River, Starring Hugh Jackman on Broadway | Playbill

The Verdict The Verdict: The Critics Review The River, Starring Hugh Jackman on Broadway The River, the new mysterious drama from acclaimed Jerusalem playwright Jez Butterworth that unfolds in a remote cabin in the woods, officially opened on Broadway Nov. 16 at the Circle in the Square.

Sonia Friedman Productions presents the limited 13-week engagement that began previews Oct. 31 and will continue through Jan. 25, 2015. The 85-minute play had its premiere in 2012 at the Royal Court Theatre. Ian Rickson (Jerusalem), who helmed the London premiere of the play, again directs.

A key draw to the production is The River's intimate setting at the 776-seat Circle in the Square, which puts audiences up close to Hollywood and Broadway star Jackman. All seats for the production's "Riverbank Seating," which places audience members inches away from the action, have sold-out for the entire limited engagement.

Jackman (The Boy from Oz, A Steady Rain, "Les Misérables") is joined by original London cast member Laura Donnelly and Cush Jumbo, who was seen in the all-female version of Julius Caesar at St. Ann's Warehouse last fall.

According to producers, "On a moonless evening, a man brings his new girlfriend to a remote cabin for a night of trout-fishing. But before the night is over, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems... and as memory collides with desire, the truth becomes the most elusive catch of all."

The critics are filing their reviews. Playbill.com will continue to update our list of Broadway reviews as they come in.
