Members of the theatre community gathered Jan. 26 to hold a candlelight vigil for the 46-year-old journalist, who was found beaten with severe head trauma just steps from his apartment in the early hours of Jan. 18. He has since undergone brain surgery, and is scheduled for further operations, due to the severity of his injuries. He is currently in serious, but stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

Gener's friends and family say that he has been in and out of consciousness since the attack. "He doesn't really exactly know who we are or where he's at sometimes, and it's really painful to see him here the way that he is because he's the most articulate person," his sister told ABC News New York.

Gener had attended the theatre earlier in the evening and was coming home from a party when he was attacked in the vicinity of 7th Avenue near 54th/55th Street.

An online campaign has also been launched to help cover Gener's extensive medical expenses. Click here to donate.

The award-winning journalist has written for such publications as The New York Times, National Public Radio, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, New York Daily News and Time Out New York, among others.

The NYPD, which is making progress in the case, informed CBS New York that it was looking into the attack as a possible bias crime. Gener's wallet and cell phone were not stolen during the attack. Witnesses, or those with information, are asked to call (800) 577-TIPS.

The NYPD has also released a sketch of Gener's possible assailant, who they said fled in a grey four-door Nissan with Mississippi license plate KAT-397.

An additional vigil will take place Jan. 27 a the Philippine Consultate General on 5th Avenue at 7 PM.
