THEIR FAVORITE THINGS: Chicago Star Amy Spanger Shares Her Theatregoing Experiences

Favorite Things   THEIR FAVORITE THINGS: Chicago Star Amy Spanger Shares Her Theatregoing Experiences's feature series Their Favorite Things asks members of the theatre community to share the Broadway performances that most affected them as part of the audience.

This week we spotlight the choices of Broadway singing actress Amy Spanger, who is currently starring as Roxie Hart in the long-running, Tony-winning revival of Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre.

Edie Falco in Side Man

I was completely blown away by her performance in this. She seemed possessed.

Alan Cumming in Cabaret

I saw the revival in '98 and I wept crocodile tears at how brilliant Alan Cumming is. I had the opportunity to act in a film with him a few years later, and I could barely speak to him because I am such a fan.

Entire cast of August: Osage County

This was the best play I've ever seen on Broadway. All the actors completely bared their souls.

Daphne Rubin-Vega in Rent

I saw this show from the front row before I had my final call back for the first national tour. She was a force of nature as Mimi.

Spencer Kayden in Urinetown

I was so moved by Spencer's performance, I called my manager and said I want to replace Jennifer Laura Thompson if she ever leaves. We got a call the next day with an audition because Jennifer was pregnant! I auditioned and got it! Spencer made me cry every night during the song "Tell Her I Love Her." She's a special lady.

Adriane Lenox in Caroline, or Change

I was bummed I didn't get to see Tonya Pinkins, but I forgot all about her the second Adriane Lenox stepped on stage and opened her mouth. I had worked with Adriane in Kiss Me, Kate, where she had played a supporting role, so I wasn't totally aware of her tremendous abilities. She is a star.

Joanna Gleason in Into The Woods

This was the first Broadway show I saw on a high school field trip. She was so funny and earthy and her timing was like a laser. She helped solidify my Broadway dream.

Mary-Louise Parker in Reckless

She was perfection in this. It was like taking a master acting class.

Liev Schreiber in Glengarry Glen Ross

This 2005 revival directed by Joe Mantello was superb. Liev completely disappeared into the role of Richard Roma. His mannerisms were so extreme, I forgot who I was looking at.

The entire cast of The Who's Tommy

When I first moved to the city, I saw this show five times. I wanted to be in it so badly, but didn't have an agent. It was spectacular.
