Classic Arts News Thierry Fischer Will Be New Principal Conductor of BBC NOW Thierry Fischer will be the new principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales starting in September 2006.
Fischer, who is Swiss, has been the principal conductor and artistic advisor for the Ulster Orchestra since 2001. He began his career as a flutist, playing principal flute with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, of which he was a founding member. He has been conducting since 1992.

BBC NOW's current principal conductor, Richard Hickox, will take over the position of music director of Opera Australia in January 2005, and will hold both positions until Fischer takes over.
