The Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater musical based on the 1891 Frank Wedekind play uses two "adult" actors (Stephen Spinella and, according to Variety, Christine Estabrook) to bounce off of a "youth" cast, telling a tale of teens lost in ignorance and fear — a repressive atmosphere fostered by parents, teachers and clergy.
Performances begin at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Nov. 16, a day earlier than first announced. Opening remains Dec. 10.
Rehearsals begin in October with the entire Off-Broadway youth ensemble returning: Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), John Gallagher Jr. (Moritz), Gideon Glick (Ernst), Jonathan Groff (Melchior), Brian Johnson (Otto), Lea Michele (Wendla), Lauren Pritchard (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Jonathan B. Wright (Hanschen) and Remy Zaken (Thea).
The producing team for Spring Awakening is Ira Pittelman, Tom Hulce, Jeffrey Richards & Jerry Frankel.
The performance schedule is as follows: Monday, Wednesday-Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 2 & 8 PM, Sunday at 2 & 7 PM. During Thanksgiving week there will be a special performance Tuesday Nov. 21 at 8 PM (no Wednesday performance).
