Tim Minchin Writing Additional Material for Matilda Film Adaptation | Playbill

News Tim Minchin Writing Additional Material for Matilda Film Adaptation Matilda The Musical composer/lyricist Tim Minchin says he is working on a film adaptation of the long-running show that is still going strong in London, New York and on North American tour.

In a July 19 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in his native Australia, Minchin confirmed that there is a movie version of Matilda in the works and that he will write additional music for it.

Broadway production spokesperson Kelly Guiod also confirmed that the film project is being discussed, but said it is not in production yet.

Minchin has been talking about a movie of the musical for several years now. In 2013 he told the Guardian of London that hoped a film would be made–but not until 2019. A 1996 non-musical film based on the original Roald Dahl book starred Danny DeVito, Mara Wilson and Rhea Perlman.

Minchin recently appeared on the TBS "Conan" show, hosted by Conan O'Brien. Minchin performed "When I Grow Up" from Matilda, accompanied by three young Matildas. Watch the video below:

As previously announced, Minchin, who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Original Score for Matilda, is also writing the music and lyrics to the new musical Groundhog Day, with a book by Danny Rubin, adapted from the 1993 film of the same name.  Groundhog Day, slated to open on Broadway in spring 2017, follows the remarkable predicament of Pittsburgh TV weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself living the same day on a loop, repeating the same thing over and over again.
