[title of show] to Play Return Australian Engagement

News   [title of show] to Play Return Australian Engagement
Magnormos' production of [title of show], which was seen in Australia this past May, will return for a limited engagement at Theatre Works in St. Kilda beginning Aug. 26.

Directed by Aaron Joyner, the cast will feature Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical's David Spencer as Jeff, Laura Fitzpatrick (The Thing About Men) as Susan and Lara Thew (Damn Yankees) as Heidi, who were all part of the May production. New for the upcoming run is Darryn Gatt (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown) as Hunter; he replaces Michael Lindner, who had a previous commitment to the Australian production of Mary Poppins.

Musical director is Sophie Thomas; Jessica Enes choreographs.

[title of show], according to press notes, "follows four friends through a musical theatre obstacle course as they attempt to write their way to Broadway [spoiler alert: they make it!] Uproarious and melodic, [title of show] takes a tongue-in-cheek look into creating something original in a culture of revivals and reality TV."

[title of show] — the new musical that, according to a fan-favorite song in the show, would rather be nine people's favorite thing than 100 people's ninth favorite thing — played its final performance at the Lyceum Theatre Oct. 12, 2008. Following runs at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2004 and the Vineyard Theatre in 2006, the entire original cast — including co-creators Jeff Bowen (score) and Hunter Bell (book) as well as co-stars Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff — made the leap to the Broadway stage. A Chorus Line's Michael Berresse, who helmed the acclaimed Off-Broadway run, also directed the Broadway version, which featured musical director-arranger Larry Pressgrove onstage playing the electric keyboard. The musical was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical (Bell).

Performances will continue through Sept. 11. Theatre Works is located at 14 Acland Street in St. Kilda. For tickets visit www.magtix.com or www.theatreworks.org.au.
