Looking at the trailer for TNT’s new series Will, one may wonder: Is it 2017 or 1589? In the new drama premiering July 10, William Shakespeare leads the fight to keep the arts alive—which sounds a bit reminiscent of current conversation throughout the theatre community by Tony-nominated playwright Paula Vogel, Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, and others.
“We are at war, and our only weapons are words,” proclaims a voiceover in the official trailer for the show.
The ten-episode television series, starring newcomer Laurie Davidson, is in fact Olde England. The trailer depicts Shakespeare as a rabble-rouser, tackling controversial topics and inventing new words for his stage work. “I will write plays that question how we love, why we fight, what is human,” says the Bard.
Set in a punk-rock contemporary world (akin to Baz Luhrmann’s treatment of Romeo + Juliet than), the trailer posits: “Money, power, greatness, it’s all just theatre.”
Will premieres July 10 at 9 PM ET on TNT.
