Off-Broadway News To Catch a Thief Stage Musical In Development Via Perry Street Theatricals

The musical, based on David Dodge's bestselling romantic-crime thriller of the same name, will feature music by Kevin Purcell and a book and lyrics by Peter Sham.

Perry Street Theatricals has announced plans to develop a new musical, To Catch a Thief, based on the David Dodge novel of the same name. The musical will feature music by Kevin Purcell (Rebecca: The Musical), and a book and lyrics by Peter Sham (Lend Me A Tenor: The Musical).

Dodge's bestselling romantic-crime thriller follows John Robie, a man retired from his double life as an elusive, infamous burglar called "Le Chat," who police were never able to track down. Years after swearing to leave his past behind and live a quiet life on the French Riviera, a copycat burglar emerges, and police begin hunting down "Le Chat" once again, thinking he has returned. To keep himself from being discovered, John must track down the new Le Chat. The 1955 film version of the novel, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starred Cary Grant as John.

The production will be directed by Tony Award-winning producer Martin Platt, and Staś Kmieć (Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish) will provide choreography.

"When I was asked to direct the musical version of To Catch a Thief, I knew only the Hitchcock film...Reading David Dodge’s 1952 novel opened up a much more interesting narrative as well as much more complete character," says Platt.

Perry Street Theatricals expects to premiere the work sometime in their 2026-2027 season.
