News Tokyo's Company East Stages Hamlet at LaMaMa Beginning Jan. 29 The U.S. premiere of Company East's Noh theatre-inspired production of Shakepeare's Hamlet begins performances at LaMaMa e.t.c. Jan. 29.

Kenji Kawarasaki directs and choreographs the 75-minute fusion of traditional Noh theatre and western dance, which features six video projectors displaying text and video. The limited engagement runs through Feb. 8.

The production, presented in English and Japanese, follows the classic tale of the prince who must avenge his father's murder. Following its LaMaMa engagement, Hamlet will make its Japanese premiere in April.

Company East's Hamlet stars Hiroshi Jin in the title role. Jin, who is known for his gender-bending portrayals of Lady Macbeth and Salome, is joined by Company East members Sho Tohno, Yoko Tomabechi, Yuji Koide, Barnardo, Mutsutaka Jin and Daisuke Kaji.

Hamlet has video design by Yoshiaki Takano and lighting by Jin Nakayama.
