News Tom Sturridge, Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen Among Cast of "Far From the Madding Crowd" Film Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge and Drama Desk Award nominee Carey Mulligan are among the cast of Fox Searchlight Pictures' upcoming film "Far From the Madding Crowd."

Directed by Thomas Vinterberg, "Far From the Madding Crowd," penned by David Nicholls ("One Day," "Starter for Ten"), began principal photography in the U.K. Sept. 16. The film will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London.

The cast includes Drama Desk nominee Mulligan (The Seagull, "The Great Gatsby"), Matthias Schoenaerts ("Rust and Bone"), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), Tony nominee Sturridge (Orphans) and Juno Temple ("The Dark Knight Rises").

"I am excited to be working with DNA, Fox Searchlight and this talented cast and crew on 'Far From the Madding Crowd.' It is a great privilege to bring such a wonderful piece of very English literature to the screen," said director Vinterberg in a statement.

Producers Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald added, "'Far from the Madding Crowd' is one of the most enduring and captivating stories in English literature. David Nicholls' script beautifully captures the heart of Hardy’s original and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the big screen with Thomas Vinterberg. It is very exciting to be working with Carey Mulligan again, as well as an exceptional cast and crew all round."

Christine Langan of BBC Films is the executive producer. Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, "Far From the Madding Crowd," according to press notes, "is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance."
