Inspired by events from her father’s life and (short-lived) basketball career, Yee's The Great Leap weaves a tale of history and personal identity. Set in San Francisco in 1989, the play follows Manford Lum, a basketball player who talks his way onto a college team just before they travel to Beijing for a “friendship” game. When they arrive, China is in the throes of the post-Cultural Revolution era, and Manford must juggle international politics and his own personal history.

The Great Leap will begin performances May 23 ahead of a June 4 opening. The limited engagement is scheduled through June 17 at Atlantic Theater Company’s Stage 2.

Yee is the recipient of the Kesselring Prize for Playwriting from the National Arts Club. Her plays include In a Word, a finalist for the ATCA/Steinberg Award; The Hatmaker’s Wife, which was an Outer Critics Circle nominee for the John Gassner Award for best play by a new American playwright; and King of The Yees, which premiered last season at The Goodman Theatre.

Magar recently directed Master at the Foundry Theatre and the Obie Award-winning production of Underground Railroad Game at Ars Nova.
