Heather Headley, who last appeared on Broadway as Shug Avery in the revival of The Color Purple, is among the trio of leads in Netflix’s upcoming Sweet Magnolias. According to Deadline, the Tony and Grammy winner will star alongside Monica Potter (Parenthood) and Brooke Elliott (Drop Dead Diva) in the drama series.

Based on the series of novels by Sherryl Woods, the show follows three lifelong friends in South Carolina. Headley will play Helen Decatur, a driven lawyer whose selflessness is matched by her cynicism.

Prior to The Color Purple, Headley earned an Olivier Award nomination for The Bodyguard and won a Tony for her title performance in the Disney musical Aida. She also originated the role of Nala in Broadway’s The Lion King. Her screen credits include Chicago Med and Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It. The Grammy winner recently released a new album of showtunes, titled Broadway My Way, inspired by her recent concert tour.

Woods will serve as an executive producer alongside showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, Dan Paulson and Normal Buckley, who will direct six of the 10 episodes.
