Actor Laura Benanti has turned in her cape: She will not return to The CW’s Supergirl as Alura Zor-El. Benanti had appeared in ten episodes of the superhero series since its premiere in 2015. She will be replaced by Smallville actor Erica Durance.
In a statement to TVLine, executive producer Andrew Keisenberg said, “Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in [New York].” No official word on what this “commitment” may be, but the New York Post reported last month that Benanti and comedian Amy Schumer may star alongside each other in Steve Martin’s new play—said to be arriving on Broadway in November.
However, Benanti tweeted she is busy embracing new motherhood:
I loved working on this show and will miss it so much! Right now it's time for me to be supermom to my own little one in NYC. https://t.co/RRC2kJm4Xt— Laura Benanti (@LauraBenanti) July 8, 2017
