At the Tony Awards, after the statues are given to the winners, they are taken to the media room, where they speak to journalists about their prizes. Playbill was able to have some one-on-one time with some of the 2023 Tony winners. We spoke with director Patrick Marber after winning the prize for Best Direction of a Play for his work on the Tony-winning play Leopoldstadt.

Watch the video above to see Marber react to winning. The British director was clearly taking in the moment, sharing that he feels relief after the nerves of being nominated. He admits that, unlike the previous time he was nominated, he thought he had a shot at winning this time. When speaking about working with Leopoldstadt's playwright Tom Stoppard, Marber shared why he loves it: "I just love the man. i love his writing, I love his manner, I love his manners. I love the way he trusts me. But, I love the way we argue."

Marber was previously nominated for Best Direction of a Play for Travesties, another Stoppard play which came to Broadway in 2018. The British director made his Broadway directorial and playwriting debut with Closer (which was later adapted into a film starring Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman(, and also directed After Miss Julie. Marber shepherded Leopoldstadt to two additional wins. Brandon Uranowitz took home the award for Best Featured Actor in a play while the production won Best Play. The big win made Stoppard the most-winning playwright in Tony history.
