The Scottsboro Boys, the Tony-nominated John Kander and Fred Ebb musical about Alabama’s infamous 1930s Scottsboro case—a flashpoint in American Civil Rights history—will be recreated by members of the original Broadway creative team for its Alabama premiere in winter 2020.

Leading the production will be director-choreographer Susan Stroman, who will re-create her work from the Broadway original.

The Alabama premiere of The Scottsboro Boys is presented in partnership with the Alabama Center for the Arts, Calhoun Community College, Athens State University, Red Mountain Theatre Company, and The Princess Theatre.

The musical features a book by David Thompson and a score by Tony Award winners Kander and the late Ebb (Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chicago).

“The show will be a recreation of the original Broadway production with this celebrated creative and producing team overseeing their work in Alabama,” said Philip Mann, who is among the producers. “It is not an overstatement to say that this is a watershed event in the cultural life of Decatur and the State of Alabama. Further, this is an initial step towards our eventual goal of establishing the Alabama Center for the Arts as a leader in the cultural and educational life of the region.”

Dates of production will be announced this spring.
